After entering the White House America's new President Donald Trump has created so much controversy that is unprecedented in the history of American presidency. But he earned some appreciation from his critics also for keeping his election promises- good or bad. After becoming president he immediately passed an executive order to ban Muslims of 7 countries from entering in America. He ordered for erecting a wall on the Mexican border. He threatened China that his administration will abandon one-China policy and will not treat them as the most favourite trade partner. He did not deviate from his Russian policy and praised Putin even after he entered the White House.
Many people thought that President Trump will act in the American politics like a bull in a China shop. His encounter with the judiciary, media and also a powerful section of the establishment all indicate an uncertain situation for his presidency. But some observers thought that after facing opposition all around Trump might change his tactics and even make some sort of a U-turn. During his presidential campaign he praised Russia's Putin and gave a strong indication that he will not follow a one-China policy. He will not treat China as the most favourite trade partner and may impose heavy customs on their goods. At that time a Sunday Times columnist predicted that Trump may enter into a war with China. But all these speculations have now been proved inaccurate. Now President Trump has changed his tune and offered his friendship to China saying that he will improve the economic relatioship and co-operation with China. China's President also reciprocated it by praising President Trump. Even after the resignation of his high-ranking official for passing information to Russia the President's reaction was not combative.
These were the first indications that the assumption that Donald Trump is a man of a rigid nature is, perhaps, not true. Now his first speech to Congress as President on last Tuesday night has shown that Donald Trump has come out as a somewhat changed person and shown his readiness for taking a U-turn in many of his policies. Now question remains whether this change is real or a political trick. In his speech to the Congress he surprised his friends and foes alike. The London daily The Evening Standard has commented on his speech last Wednesday captioned- "A very different Donald Trump takes the stage". His speech did not contain any of the combativeness of his previous remarks.
For the first time he condemned the hate crimes in America and said, "We are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms". He is the man who created division among the American nation, now he is asking its people for unity. The London Daily in its editorial shows the change in Donald Trump. According to Standard, "Trump went on to outline what his "America first policy" involves: spending money at home rather than abroad, tackling deprivation in US cities rather than global projects. The change in tone is striking-his promise to create a department of Justice Task force to reduce violent crimes. He promised generous family leave and commitment to women's health, and cross border cooperation with Canada to advance women's business". The daily further stated,"There are extraordinary elements in the President's speech: the commitment to spend $1 trillion or £800 billion on infrastructure, is staggering. His approach to the Muslim world, as in the recent travel ban, was radically different in the speech: he distinguished between Islamist terrorist and Muslims, between friendly Muslim governments and Islamic state, which he called a network of lawless savages that have slaughtered Muslims and Christians, and man, women, and children of all faiths and beliefs. We will work with our allies, including our friends and allies in the Muslim world".
The London Daily did not explain whether these are the realization of President Trump in light of the reality of the world situation and in the face of worldwide criticism and condemnation of his policies even from his own Republican party and from the establishment, or if this is a mere change of tactics. Still there is a positive side to his speech in the Congress. It will somewhat assuage the American Muslims and Muslims of the world at large that Trump will not go against Muslims, as Hitler went against the Jewish race in the last century and provoked a world war. The ban on Muslims entry in America from 7 countries may be lifted within a time frame.
These are all hopes against hope. But Donald Trump has at last tried to remove the fear, anxiety and depression among millions of people in the world about his presidency. Whether it is his real change of heart or he has succumbed to the pressure of powerful American establishment, judiciary and media and also public opinion at large, it remains to be seen. Once Barrack Obama entered the White House with worldwide praise and acclamation but when he left the Presidency he could not fulfil those expectations of the people because of the pressure from the white establishment.
But Donald Trump came to power with worldwide fear and a sense of uncertainty. He assured American people that his policy will encourage to invest at home rather than abroad. Whether that policy will strengthen the American economy or isolate America from the outside world remains debatable.
Obama came to power with hope and expectation but Trump entered the White House amidst criticism and protest. If he can realize that he may transform himself then his Presidency might overturn this fear and uncertainty into hope and expectation. However, if his speech to the Congress is not the reflection of his sincerity but a political trick it will neither be good for the world nor for America itself.
