Cocaine seizure in Ctg Port

C&F official on 10-day remand

A court here yesterday placed Saiful Islam, an official of the Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) Agent, on a 10-day remand in connection with the case for cocaine seizure in Chittagong port. The court also ordered the investigation officer (IO) of the case to submit a progress report on the case within the earliest possible time.
Metropolitan magistrate Farid Alam passed the order after the IO, Md Kamaruzzaman, also assistant commissioner of the Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), appearing before the court submitted a petition for a ten-day remand on 15 July.
However, the court fixed yesterday (Tuesday) for hearing on the remand plea. Public prosecutor Md Fakruddin Chowdhury told The Independent, “C&F Agent official Saiful is a key accused in the case. For interrogating him, the court granted a ten-day remand.”
On July 14, Saiful was arrested from the city’s Agrabad area for his alleged involvement in the incident of cocaine smuggling through Chittagong Port.
A total of six people were arrested in connection with cocaine seizure in Chittagong Port on June 6.
The other arrestees are Golam Mostafa Sohel, manager of Khan Jahan Ali, Atikur Rahman,  Atikur Rahman, business executive of Mondal Group, a business firm of readymade garments exporters, A K Azad, director (corporate, sales and marketing) of Bangladesh Shipping Lines Limited, Mostafa Kamal, an official of a developer company, Mehedi Alam, an official of a securities firm.
On June 28, a case was lodged by Osman Gani, sub-inspector of Bandar Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act accusing Nur Mohammad, chairman and Golam Mostafa Sohel , manager of Khanjahan Ali Limited.
Golam Mostafa Sohel was the manager of Prime Hatchery, a sister concern of the firm.
On June 6, getting information from INTERPOL that in a container, cocaine was smuggled from Bolivia, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate officials in presence of Chittagong Metropolitan Police and Chittagong Port Authority officials  sealed off the container with 107 drums of edible oil.
