BNP plans various programmes to rev up party machine

The BNP wants to hold various progammes throughout March and April to provide a fresh impetus to the party rank and file so that it overcomes the present stagnancy and becomes spirited once again to move ahead, according to party leaders. The party supremeo, Khaleda Zia, has emphasised the need to complete the reorganisaiton at the grassroots level, to bring back “reformist leaders” of the party and to carry out an issue-based movement to drum up support of the people, said the leaders. The BNP rank and file was rejuvenated following its first rally in the open in the past 10 months in Dhaka. The party is also planning to hold a big rally to mark Independence Day on March 26.
Party chairperson Khaleda Zia is expected to address the rally as chief guest. The BNP, which had boycotted the January 5 general election and failed in two pre and post-election movements, held a sit-in on the premises of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, on Thursday, to register its protest against the gas price hike.
“We are giving preference to carrying out reorganisation to strengthen the party at the grassroots level and continuing issue-based movement to drum up support of the people,” said BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
He said the party is also working to formulate an outline for the election-time supportive government.
Replying to a question, the BNP elader said the party would determine the next course of action at a proper time.
Another standing committee member, Lt Gen
(Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, said the BNP is trying to
overcome problems it is facing. “The party has
already overcome many difficulties. But it is still facing various problems as it cannot exercise its democratic rights,” he added.
Rahman said allowing the BNP to hold Thursday’s sit-in outside was a positive development. He hoped that the government would restore democratic rights by stopping repressive measures.
“We are working to stimulate the party rank and file to get united for an issue-based movement. We want to take national issues to the people,” he said.
The former Army officer said inactive party
leaders, known as reformists, are being summoned
by the party chairperson to involve them in party
activities.
The BNP joint secretary general, Syed Moazzem
Hossain Alal, said their issue-based movement
would continue. He also said they would distribute
leaflets among the people on the gas price hike next week to make them aware about the anti-people move of the government.
The former president of the Jubo Dal, the youth front of the BNP, said the party has a plan to organise a rally in the city on March 26 to mark Independence Day. “We will seek permission to hold the rally,” he added.
He said along with carrying out reorganisation at the grassroots level and issue-based movement, the party would work to forge greater unity among like-minded democratic parties to hold the next elections under a neutral government.
Replying to a question, Alal said they have no plans to take to the streets at this moment, but would continue their issue-based movement peacefully.
