A photography exhibition named London 1971: Unsung Heroes of Bangladesh’s Liberation War has begun at the British Council Library in its Dhaka University campus office.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali inaugurated the exhibition yesterday evening as the chief guest on the main premises of British Council.
The photographic collections convened by Ujjal Das, founder and coordinator of the project London 1971, is being showcased in the exhibition.
The exhibition reveals one of the little-exposed histories behind the birth of Bangladesh. It allows visitors, especially younger generations, to better understand the role that advocacy and campaigning played in the fight for the freedom of a nation even in a country thousands of miles away.
There are a series of events curated by renowned artist Shehzad Chowdhury exploring the representation of the conflict in London, the role of the physical British Council space in the liberation war and responses from Bangladeshi artists today. The exhibition also includes newly recorded oral histories from some of the leading Bangladeshis involved in the movement in London in 1971, which will become a permanent part of the British Council’s library collection.
The exhibition is part of the British Council’s Arts work which looks at the arts for social activism and inclusion and creating links between Bangladesh and the UK Bangladeshi Diaspora.
The exhibition remains open to all until March 31.
