Century-old college suffers from staff crunch

Century-old college suffers from staff crunch

Lack of adequate number of teachers and infrastructure shortfalls have hampered academic activities at the 131-year-old Narail Government Victoria College.
According to the pattern set by the Enam committee, the college now needs a total of 114 posts for teaching staff. But there are only 46 teachers and 68 posts are lying vacant. Among these, 52 posts of teachers are yet to be created. All the posts of practical demonstrators in the science department are lying vacant as well.
As a result, there are just 46 teachers for a total of 6500 students, making for an abysmal 1:141 teacher-student ratio.
Moreover, there are no teachers for ICT, geography, sociology and psychology, though students are enrolled for these subjects from the intermediate stage.
College principal Prof. Samadullah Mazumder said he as well as his predecessors has been pleading with the authorities for over a decade to fill up the vacant posts and to create new ones in line with the pattern set by the Enam committee, but to no avail. “It is impossible to provide quality education without the required number of teachers,” he added.
The college administration said there was a total of 28 classrooms in the college against the required 75. Though there are two modern computer labs, two posts of lab technicians are lying vacant for over a year. There is a good library in the college, but the post of librarian has been lying vacant for about 25 years.
Besides the acute staff crunch, accommodation for both teachers and students and lack of bus services have adversely affected the college. Sources said there was just one hostel consisting of 40 seats for male students and two female hostels consisting of 150 seats, though the total student population is 6,500.
The current state of affairs has left students a dejected lot. “It has a reputation of being one of the oldest and most famous colleges in the southern region of the country. This is why I took admission into this college, but now I am completely disillusioned,” complained Rubel Ahmed, a third-year honours student.
The college was established in 1886. It had only higher secondary and undergraduate courses at that time. From the 1997–98 session, honours courses in Bengali, Philosophy and Mathematics were introduced. Now there are honours courses in 12 streams and Master’s courses in four subjects in the college. Before introducing the honours courses, the college needed 62 posts of teaching staff—13 posts of professors, 15 posts of associate professors, 20 posts of assistant professors and 16 posts of lecturers.
