Bangladesh honed their skills and techniques with bat and ball in the two-dayer practice before stepping into the two Test series against the hosts Sri Lanka at the De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday. Because of the resolute batting performance especially from skipper Dinesh Chandimal, the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka XI ended in a draw. Bangladesh earlier declared their first innings at 391 for seven with Tamim Iqbal’s outstanding 136. In its pursuit, Sri Lanka XI compiled 403 for seven with Chandimal’s unbeaten score of 190.
Paceman Taskin Ahmed first made inroad in Sri Lankan top-order when he sent back Avishka Fernando and Irosh Samarasooriya in the second and fifth deliveries of his second over. Fernando fell for three, while Samarasooriya chipped in with three-ball duck.
Bangladesh pace spearhead Mustafizur Rahman, who played first longer version (two-dayer) match after returning to international cricket following a protracted injury layoff though he played two four-dayer BCL matches in domestic cricket, then removed opener Ron Chandraguptha before being made any threatening partnership while Sri Lanka XI were at 29 for three.
Chandimal rescued the team from this precarious condition by stitching together a string of partnerships en route to his indefatigable 190. Of them, the skipper pulled together 81-run fourth wicket with Roshen Silva, who fell for 38 and another 112 runs with Karunaratne, who got out for 50 not out, for the unbeaten eighth wicket stand, which crossed the 400-run mark. Rumesh Buddika (32), Leo Fransisco (27) and Wanidu de Silva (32) were the other notable contributors of the local side. Dinesh Chandimal clattered 21 fours and seven sixes in his patient but unbeaten 253-ball 190-run knock. Taskin Ahmed, who was the most successful bowler, grabbed three wickets for 41. He was ably supported by Mustafizur Rahman, who claimed two wickets for 28. Mehedi Hasan Miraj and Soumya Sarkar snapped up one wicket each for the visitors.
