Ctg gold smuggler jailed for 6 years

CHITTAGONG: A Chittagong court on Thursday sentenced a gold smuggler to six years imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling gold bars worth about Tk 76 lakh through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) in 2015, reports BSS. The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur also fined the convict Taka 10,000 and in default to suffer three months more imprisonment.
The convict gold smuggler is Mohammad Belal Hossain, 32, son of Nur Alam, hailed from Khafayetnagar village under Fatikchhari upazila of the district.
Court sources said customs intelligence arrested Dubai-returnee Belel with 19 gold bars weighing nearly two kilograms from CSAIA on March 31 in 2015.
Customs intelligence seized the gold bars after searching his luggage at green channel of the airport but Belal managed to escape leaving the luggage at the airport.
Later, Customs Intelligence authority after verifying the ownership of the luggage and ticket name of the passenger filed a case against him with city’s Patenga Thana two days later of the seizure of the gold bars. Police submitted charge-sheet against him on May 26 in 2015.
The court today after examining a total of 14 prosecution witnesses, out of 20, and passed the verdict in absentia of the convict Belal, court sources said.
