Journalists at Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday protested filing of a case against one of their fellows with Motihar Police Station by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader.
In the separate statements, three journalists union of the university, including RU Journalist Association (RUJA), RU Press club (RUPC) and RU Reporters Union (RURU) demanded the withdrawal of the case immediately otherwise they would go to tougher movement.
Earlier, Minarul Islam, executive member of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) central committee, filed a case under Section 57 of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Act against Mostafiz Mishu, a RU correspondent of daily Alakita Bangladesh, on Thursday night with Motihar police station of the city, said Humayan Kabir, officer-in-charge of thana.
BCL leader, Minarul Islam, the then president candidate of RU unite BCL, claimed that reporter Mishu, also a final year student of RU Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) department, published a report on his daily on December 10, which carried ‘false, fabricated and baseless’ information about him (Minarul) that ‘defamed and tarnished’ his image.Condemning the filling of the case, RU journalists demanded immediate withdrawal of the case. They alleged that vested quarters were trying to make journalists helpless by harassing them. They also demanded intervention of university administration in this regard.
