Monpura government dormitory in shambles

About 22 officers and employees of Monpura upazila, an island on the Meghna River close to the Bay of Bengal, have been living in the dilapidated and vulnerable dormitory for a long time.
Sources said the two-storey dormitory building was constructed in 1984 by the Local Government and Engineering Department for the government employees. But there has not been any repair work over the last 31 years.
Cracks have developed in its pillars, walls and in the ceiling. Besides, most of the doors and windows have been damaged badly.
But the officers and employees of all the upazila offices in Monpura upazila are compelled to live in the dormitory for want of alternative accommodation.
Upazila accountant Mizanur Rahman and sub-assistant agriculture officer Humayun Kabir said they are living there as they have not found rental houses.
While contacted Earshad Ali Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Abdul Hamid, upazila Engineer of Monpura admitted the situation and said initiatives would be taken to repair the building immediately.
