‘Neo JMB leader’, three others killed in ‘gunfights’

Four people including an alleged leader of the militant group neo JMB were killed in reported gunfights with law enforcers in Bogra, Brahmanbaria and Bagerhat districts yesterday, reports UNB. A suspected neo JMB member was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Jamnagar in Sherpur upazila of Bogra. The deceased was identified as Amijul alias Al Amin Rony, chief of neo JMB of northern region and son of Nurul Islam, a resident of Bujrum Radharampur village in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi.
Tipped off, a police team conducted a drive in the area when Amijul along with his associates had been there around 3:00 am, said Sonatan Chakrabarty, additional superintendent of police.
Sensing the law enforcers' presence, they opened fire on them, forcing the police to fire back that triggered a gunfight. Amijul was caught in the line of fire and injured while his associates managed to flee the scene. He was taken to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police sent the body to the hospital  morgue for autopsy. The law enforcers also seized one pistol, one magazine and two bullets from the spot. Amijul was wanted in a number of  cases, the ASP added.
In Brahmanbaria, a suspected drug peddler and a robber were killed in separate incidents of ‘gunfights’ with police in Bijoynagar upazila early yesterday. The deceased were identified as drug peddler Nurul Islam and robber Bulbul. Ali Arshad, officer-in-charge of Bijoynagar Police Station, said police arrested Nurul Islam from Singabil area on Wednesday night.
After gleaning information in a primary interrogation, a team of police along with Nurul conducted a drive in Merashani Bazar area in the early morning. When the team reached the area, his associates opened fire on police, prompting the law enforcer to fire back that triggered a gunfight. Nurul died on the spot during the exchange of fire.
Police also seized two kilograms of hemp, a pipe gun, two-round cartridges, and two machetes from the spot.
Meanwhile, Bulbul was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police as a team of police conducted drive on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Khetabari area while a gang of robber was taking preparation for committing robbery early in the morning, said police.
Mofiz Uddin, officer-in-charge of detective branch of police, said that a policeman was also injured in the gunfight. In the Sundarbans, a suspected forest robber was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) early yesterday
The gunfight took place at Sukhpara Char under Sundarbans east zone in Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat. The deceased, Billal Mir alias Kana Billal, was a member of 'Samsu Bahini', an infamous forest robber gang, said RAB sources.
A team of RAB-8 of Barisal conducted a drive in the area to arrest robbers in the early hours on Thursday. Sensing the presence of the elite force, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight, said sources.
Billal got caught in the line of fire and died on the spot from a bullet injury while the others managed to flee the scene. RAB members recovered Billal's body and sent it to local hospital morgue for autopsy. Five firearms and 77 bullets were seized from the spot, said RAB.
