With the spring cool fading under a scorching sun, the mercury climbed to a maximum of 33.2 degrees Celsius in the capital yesterday, shooting up from Wednesday’s 31.5 degrees Celsius. And it is likely to slowly rise further in the next three days, said Hafizur Rahman, the officer on duty at the Dhaka Met Office yesterday.
The country experienced the highest temperature of 34.5 Degrees Celsius respectively in Isurdi and Chuadanga and a minimum of 13.2 degrees Celsius in Srimangal, a hill town of sylvan surroundings that was once the summer retreat of English tea planters and jute and indigo merchants.
As the heat increases, the arrival of the south-west winds mixing with westerly winds, following the extension of a trough of westerly winds over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, marks the beginning of a season of rainstorms, particularly the nor’westers, in the next three days, the meteorologist said.
The situation may also generate a light fog enveloping the country’s river basins and adjoining areas during the early mornings, a Met office forecast said.
Meanwhile, a long-range forecast for March by the Met office said yesterday that there was a possibility of day temperatures being 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, a degree or two above normal.
The country’s west and north-western regions may experience mild heat towards the end of the month.
The north, north-west and the central regions may also see one or two days of moderate to severe nor’westers, while other parts of the country may see three to four days of light and light-to-moderate nor’westers.
Analysing the February weather, the report said that there had been less than normal rainfall during the month. But the rainfall was likely to be normal in March.
