Students of North South University (NSU) withdrew their demonstration yesterday after the authorities assured them that those who had assaulted one of their fellow students would be brought to justice. University sources said the security guards of Bashundhara Group allegedly assaulted a BBA student on Wednesday. This sparked the demonstration by students who demanded punishment for the alleged assaulters.
Meanwhile, the NSU authority suspended all classes and exams on Thursday and Friday. The next schedule would be announced later.
An NSU notice said an emergency meeting was held among the NSU authority, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Bashundhara Group, and students’ representatives at the proctor’s office. The Bashundhara Group accepted several demands of the NSU students.
The students demanded that action should be taken against the accused Bashundhara security guards by both Bashundhara Group and the DMP, full compensation (medical and property) would be given to the victim by Bashundhara Group, Bashundhara security guards would be trained to treat students with respect, and the entrance to Bashundhara R/A with vehicles near Apollo Hospital would remain open until 8 pm from now on and extended to 10 pm later.
According to the officer-in-charge of Bhatara police station, the students who were caught by the police were released afterwards. So, no confusion or propaganda should be spread from other sources, the NSU authority said.
NSU sources said that Shahriar Hasnat Tapu, a sixth-semester BBA student, who was assaulted by guards on Wednesday night, is now out of danger. He has been released from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Fellow students said the incident took place when Tapu and another student got into an argument with the Bashundhara security guards over parking a motorcycle at the Apollo Gate, an entrance to the residential area, around 10 pm.
At one stage of the altercation, the guards allegedly attacked Tapu, who received severe injuries. He was rushed to Apollo Hospitals and later referred to DMCH.
The students took to the street on Wednesday night itself and again staged a protest at 8am yesterday. They blocked Pragati Sarani around 10.30am and until 1pm, defying a police order to withdraw their protest.
Halting traffic, hundreds of students, wielding banners and chanting slogans, demanded punishment for the accused and compensation for their fellow student.
Assistant commissioner (Gulshan Zone) Rafiqul Islam said the NSU students staged a demonstration in front of the Bashundhara Housing Project on Kuril Bishwa Road at 10.30am. They entered the housing project around 11.30am and started vandalising several structures, he added.
Police rushed to the spot and lobbed tear-gas canisters to disperse the students. However, the students claimed that they staged a peaceful protest. Sources close to the NSU authority said they hoped the student would get justice and that such an incident would not be repeated in future.
In an urgent notice, the NSU authority requested the students and staff members not to visit restaurants near the NSU campus. All their food outlets were open and would be serving the NSU community in full capacity, the notice read.
