The Health Ministry has suspended four interns of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital (SZMC) in Bogra for six months for assaulting a patient's relative, reports UNB.
The four are Dr Nurjahan Binte Islam Naz, Dr Md Ashiquzzaman Asif, Dr Md Kutub Uddin and Dr MA Al Mamun.
Naz will have to complete her internship from Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital, while Asif from Faridpur Medical College and Hospital, Kutub Uddin from Jessore Medical College and Hospital and Mamun from Khulna Medical College and Hospital after six months of their punishment, said Parikkhit Chowdhury, senior information officer of the ministry.
Earlier on February 19, Alauddin Sarkar, 60, of Konagati in Sirajganj, was admitted to the hospital at midnight.
There had been an altercation between Alauddin's son Rauf and an intern over switching on a fan in room No. 475 of the hospital and the intern beat Rauf at one stage of their argument. Later, other interns joined him, took the youth to a room and beat him further. They also locked the emergency unit of the hospital and went on an indefinite strike claiming that patients' relatives 'misbehaved' with them.
Over the incident, the ministry formed a probe committee led by additional secretary Habibur Rahman on February 23. The step has been taken against the four interns following the probe committee's report.
