Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the research and academic activities of public think tank Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) will be bolstered following the enactment of Bangladesh Unnayan Gobeshona Protishthan Act, 2017.
“Bangladesh Unnayan Gobeshona Protishthan or Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) is a centre for the economists and development thinkers of Bangladesh. BIDS will be able to provide post-graduation degrees on economics, demography and other social sciences and create other facilities for training, alongside its existing functions,” he said while briefing the reporters at planning ministry at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital yesterday.
BIDS is a globally recognised think thank and ranked 97th among 5000 thinks thank in the world, he said. The minister said BIDS secured 17th position in Asia for its research works.
Bangladesh Unnayan Gobeshona Protishthan Bill, 2017' was passed in Parliament on Wednesday to scrap and reframe the Bangladesh Unnayan Gobeshona Protishthan Act, 1974.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal moved the bill in the House and it was passed by voice vote with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
The bill was passed in Bangla with inclusion of some additional provisions aiming to expedite the activities of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
Now the BIDS can provide facilities for training in economics, demography and other social sciences.
