Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told parliament that her government will take steps to rehabilitate those militants who want to return to the right path alongside giving them the necessary legal assistance, reports UNB.
“Bangladesh is now regarded as a ‘role model’ across the globe in curbing militancy,” she said replying to a starred tabled question from ruling party MP Kamal Ahmed Mazumder (Dhaka-15) during her scheduled question-answer session in the House.Mentioning that Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony and people hate communalism and militancy, the Leader of the House said, “Terrorism, communalism and militancy are a threat to the country’s balanced development and security.”
She said the present government has taken effective steps and worked out plans based on ‘zero tolerance’ policy to curb militancy.
Sheikh Hasina said it has been possible to contain militant activities in the country to a great extent due to some recent successful operations against militants, brightening the country’s image abroad. Mentioning some of the new strategies to be taken by the government in curbing militant activities, she said the vigilance by the intelligence agencies concerned would further be strengthened against the online-based publicity by militant outfits.
She said steps have been taken to impart training on technical efficiency alongside imparting specialised training to law enforcement and intelligence agencies aiming to curb militancy.
The Prime Minister said a process is underway to frame a time-befitting Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to instantly tackle terrorist and militant activities.
Hasina also informed the House that a mass resistance would be built against militancy and extreme communalism through a massive anti-militancy campaign along with people from all classes, including political organisations, imams of the mosques, alem, teachers, students, guardians, intellectuals, businesspeople and various professional organisations.
She said it is also one of the major successes of the present government against the anti-militancy drive as a good number of militants have already surrendered while steps are underway to rehabilitate those through motivation as well as extending necessary support.
