The BNP secretary-general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has alleged that a minister has instigated the transport strike.
“An influential minister instigated the transport strike, because of which an anarchic situation prevails. The government has failed to tackle the situation,” he said while speaking at a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday.
The BNP organised the meeting in memory of Army officials killed during the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny at Pilkhana. The BNP standing committee member and former army chief, Lt. Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, presided over the meeting. Mirza Alamgir said the BDR killings took place as part of a conspiracy to destroy the national security system.
He blamed the Prime Minister for having failed to take timely measures in favour of the Army men when they came under attack. He mentioned that whenever the country’s independence and sovereignty came under repeated attacks, the Army resisted it. Criticising the government for hiking gas prices, the BNP leader said it was immoral and illogical.
He accused the government of trying to control everything, including the judiciary, law enforcers and the media because they want to establish one-party rule in the country.
The BNP secretary general alleged that the government has turned the entire country into a prison by putting Opposition leaders and activists in jail in connection with “false cases”.
He made it clear that as a democratic political party, the BNP wants to take part in the election, but it must be held under a neutral government.
Among others, BNP standing committee member, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, vice-chairman Ruhul Alam Chowdhury and senior joint secretary-general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi addressed the meeting.
