The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested militant leader Boro Mizan from a bus at Banani’s Kakoli crossing area in the capital on Tuesday night.
Talking to The Independent yesterday afternoon, the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the DMP (media and public relations), Mohammad Yousuf Ali, confirmed the arrest.
He claimed Boro Mizan is the leader of a group that supplied arms and explosives used in the terrorist attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan last year. Mizan was the chief of the new faction of the banned militant outfit, Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (New JMB), at Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district. He is also the front man for supplying arms and explosives to the Gulshan attackers.
Yousuf Ali said Mizan was the chief commander of the militant group, Purbo Jund Al Tawhid, and later joined the New JMB with the help of the Gulshan attack mastermind, Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury.
Mizan formed a group that supplied arms, grenades, detonators and explosives to the new militant group from Chapainawabganj.
The grenade and firearms used in the Holey Artisan attack was brought to the capital with the help of Mizan’s group and handed over to militant Tanvir Qadri, alias Abdul Karim, before the attack, said the police.
Mizan was shown arrested in a case lodged with Darusalam police station in the capital on November 2 last year.
He was produced in court and a 10-day remand was sought. The court fixed March 5 for the remand hearing, said ADC Yousuf.
In the attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery, 20 hostages were murdered during the siege, before commandos stormed the popular hangout in the city.
Thirteen hostages were rescued, while six of the gunmen were killed in the 50-minute Army-led joint forces’ operation, codenamed ‘Operation Thunderbolt’.
During the hostage crisis, the first such incident in the country, two police officers were killed and dozens injured when law enforcers tried to close the restaurant. The US-based SITE Intelligence Group said the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq news agency.
