Experts at a discussion in Dhaka yesterday stressed the need for involving private sector in the process of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) ahead of the deadline set by the United Nations, reports UNB.
It will not be possible for the government alone to attain SDGs and that is why it should involve private sector in its efforts to achieve goals within the stipulated timeframe.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) arranged the discussion titled 'Strategies for Business Benefits from SDGs for the Private Sector' in its conference room in the capital. Speaking at the seminar, economist Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said achieving SDGs will be a challenging task due to a rise in global inequality which reached its peak.
"Inequality has also reached the highest level in the country. About 20 percent families control over 60 percent of total income in Dhaka city...we have to focus on addressing inequality. Now, inequality is not only a problem, but an extreme problem," he said, citing the findings of a study.
Highlighting the role of public and private sectors and NGOs in attaining SDGs, Zillur, an adviser to the former caretaker government, said contribution of private sector to SDGs should come through their main work - business. Calling upon the government to invest in social intervention to achieve SDGs, he said bringing out Bangladesh from low-quality universal education will also be a challenge in this regard.
