Discussion held at IUB
The School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised an in-depth interactive discussion session with the author Dr Tamina M Chowdhury on her book ‘Indigenous Identity in South Asia: Making claims in the colonial Chittagong Hill Tracts’ on IUB campus at Bashundhara in the capital on Monday, says a press release.
Along with the author, Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, Professor, Department of International Relations, Dhaka University, eminent human rights activists Khushi Kabir and Dr Md Tanzimuddin Khan, Associate Professor, Department of International Relations, Dhaka University, were present as key discussants of the session.
The event was moderated by Towhid Samad, Founder Trustee and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, IUB and ESTCDT.
Prof M Omar Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of IUB, describing the background of this book, said this book is an outcome of her PhD research work that she started six years back while studying at Cambridge University. She informed that she had used unexplored archival sources in writing this book which showed how the concepts of ‘territory’ and of a ‘people indigenous to it’ have been forged and politicized.
Faujdarhat Cadet College students get Duke of Edinburgh Award
Around 140 students from Faujdarhat Cadet College, one of the leading cadet colleges in Bangladesh, has received The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE) under bronze category, a press release said yesterday.
It said around 140 students of the cadet college got the award, one of world’s most prestigious awards for young people, for their exceptional self development initiatives. The award offers immense opportunities for young people to learn life skills needed in the changing world.
Introduced first time in Bangladesh in 2008, youths have received it for their different initiatives that include sincere efforts to teach underprivileged children, leading cleaning up campaign at communities, learning foreign languages, playing musical instruments, expeditions and sport activities.
Headquartered in the UK and its regional office in Australia, the award has so far been given to over 300,000 youths globally since 1956. In Bangladesh, the award is now given only among youths of Dhaka and Chittagong.
The award recognizes adolescents and young adults for completing a series of self-improvement exercises, says the DofE website.
Cultural week ends at SAU
A week long cultural programme ended at the auditorium of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) yesterday.
The cultural week was held for the first time from February 23, 2017 by the alliance of the social and cultural organisations of SAU.
The students of different department of the university participated in the programme. The students with the SAU officials brought out a colorful procession with banner, festoons, placards and paraded campus streets in the afternoon on the first day of the program.
The weekly programme included drama, dances, comics, music, fashion shows, reciting poems.
