Mosquito menace turns acute at JU

JU Correspondent

This spring has brought stings for students, teachers and employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) due to a sudden spurt in the mosquito population on the campus.
The mosquito menace is at its peak between early evening and late night. Students have resorted to burning mosquito coils at the JU central library after the evening to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
The present situation is hampering the academic activities as the final examinations of most departments are ongoing.
Kaniz Farhana Tuli, a resident student of JU Jahanara Imam Hall, said, "Our regular activities are being hampered due to the mosquito problem.
There is no place to sit and relax anywhere in the campus for a single minute after evening."
There are huge piles of debris near all the buildings, including the residential dorms, library and academic buildings. Moreover, drains surrounding the dorms are very dirty, while the waters of the lakes and ponds inside the campus are extremely polluted. Even the water reservoirs are very dirty. The areas next to the halls have not been cleaned for a long time and are choked with weeds.
These have become happy breeding grounds for mosquitoes.Students have demanded that the university authorities should resolve this situation as early as possible.
Prof. Kabirul Bashar of the Zoology department, a well-known researcher on mosquitoes, said, "During the cold season, mosquito eggs remain dormant. They hatch at the end of winter.
This is the main reason for the current situation." “We need to take initiatives at three steps. First, we must clean the bushes, drains, and waterbodies inside the campus. Then, we have to use ‘Larva Side’ to destroy the mosquito eggs in these areas. Finally, we have to apply ‘Adultified’ (a mosquito vaccine) to kill the adult mosquitoes," he suggested.
JU registrar Abu Bakr Siddique said, “We've sprayed liquid chemicals twice for removing the mosquitoes, but the menace continues unabated. We've told the university state office to take the initiative for keeping the campus area neat and clean."
