Experts urged all stakeholders of the readymade garments (RMG) sector of Bangladesh to be more involved in more corporate social responsibility (CSR) in terms of socio-economic development and environmental protection to achieve international compliance.
They were speaking at at a seminar—Market Demand for CSR in Textile and Apparel Sector— held at a hotel in the capital yesterday.
The seminar was organised jointly by the BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) and Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Development in Higher Education (NICHE).
Experts defined CSR as a business approach that contributes to sustainable development by delivering economic, social and environmental benefits for all stakeholders.
Ton Wiedenhoff, senior advisor of the International Apparel Federation, presented a keynote paper in the seminar.
While explaining sustainability in the RMG sector, Wiedenhoff said it can be divided into two parts—compliance and CSR. So far, Bangladesh has been performing strongly in four RMG sectors, namely knit, sweaters, pants and jeans.
Managing the supply chain process is a key element factor in the RMG sector. New techniques and knowledge can add significant value to each integral part of this process, he added.
Leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) is a rating system devised by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage market transformation towards sustainable designs.
BGMEA senior vice-president Faruque Hassan explained his view on CSR in textile and RMG production. He said 67 LEED-certified factories are operating in Bangladesh and among these 13 have received platinum status, 20 gold status and 34 silver status.
He added that 220 factories are waiting in the pipeline to get the LEED certification.
Highlighting RMG as the largest workforce sector in Bangladesh, Faruque Hassan said there are 4.4 million workers in the RMG sector, most of them women. Each year, more than two million workers enter this sector and hence it is essential to ensure complete safety and decent working environment for women.
lot of garments factories in Bangladesh are socially compliant and have started offering facilities such as daycare centre for the children of workers, medical facilities, and protein- and calorie-rich food, said the senior vice-president of the BGMEA.
BGMEA officials stated that workers can get loans from banks of up to six to 10 times more than their salaries.
