Awami League(AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday called for intra-party unity ahead of the next general election in 2019. “You (party leaders and workers) shouldn’t get involved in infighting ahead of the next polls. If anyone is found involved in intra-party feuds, that person will be ousted from the party,” Quader told a gathering at Dohar in Dhaka district. Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, further said the AL unit in Dohar upazila should work in favour of the candidate to be nominated by the party to contest the polls from the constituency. “You (leaders and workers) should please the people instead of trying to please central leaders,” he added. The AL leader made the call at a reception ceremony for eminent businessman Salman F Rahman, who was recently appointed as the private sector development affairs adviser to AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The reception was organised by the Dohar upazila AL unit at Joypara Pilot School and College. Earlier, Salman F Rahman was showered with flower petals to celebrate his appointment when he arrived at the venue. Addressing the colourful reception ceremony, Rahman echoed Quader in calling for intra-party unity. He added that the party leaders and workers should try to win over the minds of the neutral voters ahead of the parliamentary polls. “If we work together ahead of the next polls, we will be able to gift the constituency to our leader Sheikh Hasina,” said Rahman, who is the vice-chairman of BEXIMCO Group, one of the largest private sector conglomerates in the country. Rahman said the people of Dohar should work for the candidate who gets the AL ticket from the constituency in the upcoming 11th parliamentary election. Among others, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, State Minister For Power, Energy And Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid (Bipu), former BNP leader Nazmul Huda and AL presidium member Abdul Mannan Khan were present on the occasion.
