Saiful Bari Titu, head coach of Chittagong Abahni Limited, expressed is mixed experience with the ongoing Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament at the MAZ Aziz Stadium, Chittagong.
Chittagong Abahani are the host of the tournament and also won the title of the first edition last year and now it has become very prestigious for them to retain the championship. Meanwhile, out of three home teams only Chittagong Abahani left to carry the flag of the country, when Dhaka giants Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited have already been eliminated from the group phase.
Saiful Bari Titu when talking to the reporters in their camp in Chittagong yesterday said, “Really now it is one kind of prestige for us to remain up to final and obviously to win the trophy.”
“You know only Chittagong Abahani remained in the progression while the rest of two teams from our country have already been eliminated, so, only we can bring some honours for both the club and the country with winning the trophy or at least playing in the final.”
“To be honest, it is also something very important for me to win the title, because I have taken the charge of the team this season, now it is a huge responsibility on my shoulder to hold the title.”
About the overall results of home teams in the tournament, Titu said, “You see it is an international club cup tournament, as home teams, all of us had to be very much cautious, I want to mean, we should have enough preparation for the competition.”
“Unfortunately none of the three teams of our country could participate with adequate preparation, as per I know. If I tell about my team, you know before coming here, most of the players were engaged with a team to play a tournament in Magura where Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting also played.”
“It is really very disappointing that Abahani or Mohammedan already get out from the group stage, it would be better, if at least any of them would remain in contention,” Titu expressed his opinion about the eliminations of the country’s giants.
Titu also expressed his discontent about the poor attendance in the gallery, “Really it is a wonder that a club of home city is oranising an international tournament and this time good teams from and abroad are taking part in the competition but home fans yet to gather in large.”
“Actually fans are one of the main parts to make a tournament success but the absence of supporters local players do not get encourage from the gallery.”
“The tournament is more standard than last year, as these time teams are stronger, matches are also very competitive,” said Titu.
“Nepal and Maldives teams are playing well, I had been working with the national team since 2010, Nepal and Maldives improved a lot, technically and tactically they are now very sound, I don’t know what makes the spectators to refrain from the gallery.”
“However, wait and see, what can we do to retain the title, if we will be successful then at least it would be a big part of success of organizing the tournament,” said Titu.
