The Rajshahi University (RU) campus is in the grip of a mosquito menace.
Things have come to such a pass on the RU campus that students have to use mosquito nets just before nightfall. Everyone studies under the mosquito nets.
Garbage and trash have piled up next to the 16 residence halls of the university near the academic buildings. Besides, floating food shops across the campus and around the stadium area keep dropping litter. These areas have become mosquito breeding centres.
Bushes in different places of the campus are not cleaned for long periods of time. As a result, the mosquito population keeps increasing at Zuberi Field, Shaheed Minar, Tukitaki and Iblish premises, Sabash Bangladesh, and Paschim Paar, including the residential halls.
Students suffer from various diseases due to mosquito bites. Several students of the residence halls complained that their studies have been badly affected due to the spurt in the mosquito population. “It’s impossible to study for a long period without using mosquito repellents,” groused a student.
Prof. Dr Sadekul Arefin Matin, former student adviser of the university, said: “I understand the problem. But the use of sprays to kill mosquitoes is not the work of the university. Rajshahi City Corporation uses sprays every year to kill mosquitoes.”
Md. Ashraful Haque, chief executive engineer of Rajshahi City Corporation, said: “We haven’t received mosquito sprays yet. However, we are told that the sprays will come in a day or two. We’ll use that on the bushes and in the residence halls within four to five days.”
