Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has stressed the need for skill-based technical education for the economic development of the country, says a press release.
The minister made the observation while addressing the inaugural function of Skills Competition 2016, an annual event for the students of country’s technical education, as the chief guest in the capital yesterday.
Skills and Training Enhancement Project (STEP), a joint project of Bangladesh government, Canada and World Bank to improve technical education of the country.
The minister said, “Education will be skill-based. Education without skill causes burden for individual, family, society and country.”
“Modern technical and vocational education and training can only ensure economic development of the country. The government will take initiative to modernise education system gradually”, the minister stressed.
Among others, Md Sohorab Hossain, secretary, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Ministry of Education, and Md Alamgir, Secretary, Technical and Madrasah Education Division, Ministry of Education, Dr Mokhlesur Rahman, senior operations officer, World Bank, Dr Mostafizur Rahman, Chairman, Bangladesh Technical Education Board, and A B M Azad, Roject Director, STEP, addressed the function.
Ashoke Kumar Biswas, Director General (Additional Secretary), Directorate of Technical Education, presided over the inaugural function.
The minister told the function that education is the priority sector of the government and technical education is the first. The government has already ensured 14per cent enrollment in the technical education which was only 1per cent. The government is working hard to reach this to 20 per cent by 2020 and 30 per cent by 2030.
Our target is to take it to more than 65 per cent, the minister pointed out.
The minister told the function that the country is now enjoying the advantage of demographic dividend. A country gets this opportunity after 100 years. We have to educate our young generation in technical education so that we can achieve middle income status by 2021 and developed country status by 2041, the minister stressed.
