President Abdul Hamid while addressing the 3rd convocation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) at Gazipur recently rightly urged the concerned people including agriculture scientists and researchers to ensure sustainable agricultural development in Bangladesh. Though export earnings from garment sector and remittance of migrant workers are the two most important drivers of Bangladesh’s economy, agriculture sector has always been its mainstay.
Bangladesh has gained over the years remarkable achievement in the field of food production, thanks to efforts of our farmers and the innovation by the country’s agriculture scientists of newer varieties agricultural produces particularly rice, but in many areas of farming Bangladesh could not achieve self sufficiency as yet. We still have to import food grains, fish and meat production is still far short than the actual demand. Hence the necessity of putting relentless efforts to enhance the country’s farming ability.
Bangladesh is overburdened with a huge size of population and in the coming years, population will grow still more. Even garment sector may fall in bad days in the coming years due to competition in the sector as newer countries are joining the business. On the other hand, we often witness dip in the migrants’ remittance. Therefore, we cannot say, at present, that Bangladesh’s economy is based on solid ground. In fact, it is still vulnerable to many challenges ahead.
That is why we need an agriculture that can not only provide the local demand of our food, but also can earn exporting ability producing surplus in the relevant fields. For this the nation has to keep its farmers happy. On the one hand, they have to be taught about sustainable method and technology to ensure a new revolution in agriculture and on the other hand it has to be ensured that they get a fair price of their crops including potato, mangoes, tomato and other seasonal fruits, as the president observed in the convocation ceremony.
For achieving sustainable growth of our agriculture, the country needs first a vision-oriented agricultural policy that would focus on innovative research to boost country’s food production as well as keeping farmers content on the return of their output as its main targets. In many of the rural areas of Bangladesh, there is also the urgent need of infrastructure for swift transportation of produces. All these call for investing more money in research work, for providing more agricultural subsidy, and for building infrastructure; and the government ought to do it as a priority.
