Pocheon Citizen Football Club of South Korea came from a goal down to draw with TC Sports Club of Maldives to book their place in the last fours in the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong yesterday.
The draw of Pocheon Club not only confirmed their semifinal berth but it also meant no chance left for Abahani Limited to play in the semifinal stage.
In fact Abahani Limited (Dhaka) duly outclassed in their progressing to the semifinal when they drew their previous match against Pocheon after a shocking defeat at the hand of the TC Sports in their opening match and after the draw of TC Sports and Pocheon match ensured their elimination.
By virtue of the draw, TC Sports Club stormed into the semifinal as the unbeaten champions of Group A with obtaining seven points and Pocheon also remained unbeaten to make room in the semifinal.
On their way to semifinal TC Sports opened the campaign defeating Abahani Limited by a solitary goal and FC Alga of Kyrgyzstan by 2-1 before drawing the last match against Pocheon on the day.
However, the TC Sports, who earlier confirmed their semifinal after successive two victories in the previous matches before this match, dropped four players from the starting lineup but fought almost evenly and also led first half by 1-0. Pocheon, who needed only draw to confirm their place in the last fours, despite having a great threat after conceding a goal just in the added period of the first half, bounced back in the second half to earn the expected result.
Maldives team TC Sports, after surviving some initial assaults, went ahead with Stewart Cornelius’s good effort when the forward edged past a defender after receiving a forward pass from midfield before placing the ball into far post (1-0).
Trailing by 0-1, Pocheon became aggressive to bring the result in favour of them and dominated the almost full second half match and also opened scoring chances but failed to mark the targets.
Finally, on 75th minute Park Jung Soo, gave great relief to Pocheon when he scored the important goal after a Ko Ji Man’s penalty shot returned to play (1-1).
This time, defender Mohamad Azzam made a bad tackle to Jang Yong and referee indicated for spot kick but Ko Ji Man’s shot hit the side post and one of the Olympians in the team Park Jung Soo, who was nearby slammed home.
