Rohingya refugees start receiving Malaysian relief

Rohingya refugees breathe a sigh of relief as they start receiving relief materials received from Malaysia. So far, some 1,000 refugee families received the relief at Kutupalong and Leda camps in Ukhia and Leda areas. A Malaysian humanitarian aid ship, ‘Nautical Aliya’, carrying as many as 1,472 tonnes of relief materials for the Rohingyas, reached Bangladesh on Monday and was berthed at the Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT).
“We are very happy to receive the help that include food packages for which we have been waiting so long after passing many a days without food with little children,” said one Ayesha Begum. She crossed into Bangladesh and had taken refuge at a camp in the district with her children after fleeing the ethnic cleansing by Myanmar military, torching their homes, crops and raping women like her. Ayesha and her child had been living on clothes, food and money donated by the local people as she could not bring anything in with her. Two separate committees have been formed to distribute the relief items. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BRCS) will distribute the relief materials including food items and non-food items. The relief materials would be distributed among 15,000 families in Ukhia and Teknaf. Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar Ali Hossain told reporters that the relief packages contain 17essential items that included rice, lentil, soap, sari and lungi. The distribution would be completed in a week, the DC added. Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, secretary of the Cox’s Bazar unit Red Cresecent Society, said they have been preparing the list of Rohingyas for the past seven days.
