Bangladeshi fans of famous Japanese writer Haruki Murakami can now read one of his most popular novels, ‘Norwegian Wood’, in Bangla.
Batighor Publications has published the Bangla translation done by Kousik Zaman at this year’s Ekushey Book Fair. The book can also be ordered online, says a press release.
‘Norwegian Wood’, a 1987 novel by Murakami, is a nostalgic story of loss and maturity. It is narrated from the first-person perspective of Toru Watanabe, who reminisces about his days as a university student in Tokyo when, as a grown-up in Germany, he hears an orchestra play the song ‘Norwegian Wood’ by The Beatles.
The backdrop of the novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s when Japanese students, like those in other countries, were protesting against the established order. At the time, Toru Watanabe was a student of drama, trying to cope with depression and loneliness of campus life. Then, two women of different personalities enter his life. One is the former girlfriend of his deceased friend, beautiful yet troubled Naoko; the other is lively and independent Midori. Who should he choose? Meanwhile, through the eyes of Toru and Midori, the writer portrays the erstwhile student movement as largely weak and hypocritical.
Life’s complications, relationships, solitude and the loss of loved ones are all beautifully portrayed by the dynamic Murakami. You will feel as if this story defines the picture of a world that you are engaged in.
