A local court yesterday sentenced Jamir Hossain, the driver of a bus involved in a road accident that killed five people, including renowned filmmaker Tareque Masud and cinematographer Mishuk Munier, to rigorous life imprisonment.

A case of causing death by dangerous driving had been filed against the driver.
The additional district and session judge of Manikganj, Al Mahmud Foyzul Kabir, handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom under two different Sections.
The milestone verdict came after five-and-a-half years following the shocking road accident.
Jamir Hossain alias Jamir, 48, son of the late Abdur Rahim Biswas of Daulatdiar village under Chuadanga district, was present in the court when the judge pronounced the verdict.
The driver had been out on bail from November 17, 2011.
Jamir Hossain was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000. The prison term would be extended by three months of simple imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine slapped on him for ‘reckless driving and causing death due to negligence’ under Section 304 of the BPC (Bangladesh Panal code).
The court sentenced him to prison for two years under Section 427 of the BPC and fined him Tk 2,000 for using his expired driving license. He will have to do another one month of simple imprisonment if he fails to pay up.
The convicted driver’s prison term would be reduced by the number of days he had spent in prison before the sentence, accofding to the verdict.
Court sources said a total of five charges had been framed against Jamir Hossain, but he pleaded guilty on to two counts of causing death by reckless driving and causing death due to negligence and damaging the car.
The court did not give any punishment under Sections 279, 337 and 338(ka), though the prosecution had proved the charges against him, the verdict stated.
“The judge passed the verdict after the court found Jamir guilty of the charges against him following the witness testimonies,” the additional public prosecutor in the case, advocate Afsarul Islam Moni, told the Independent.
