Defending champions Walton Central Zone scripted their maiden victory thrashing Islami Bank East Zone by 227 runs in the fourth round game of the franchisee-based Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah yesterday.
A couple of centuries from Naeem Islam and Forhad Hossain steered BCB North Zone to draw the match against Prime Bank South Zone at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothisthan (BKSP) Ground-4 in Savar.
East Zone vs Central Zone
Resuming the final day at 266-5, Walton Central Zone declared their second innings for 282-7 after losing their overnight batsmen-Taibur Rahman Parvez and Nurul Hasan Sohan while their overall lead stood at 399. Parvez trudged back for 57 and Sohan walked back for 45. New pacer Ebadot Hossain, Alok Kapali and Mominul Haque bagged two wickets each for East Zone.
Chasing the target of 400 runs to win, Islami Bank East Zone were bowled out for 172 in 56.2 overs. It is Kamrul Islam Rabbi, who brought the first breakthrough for Central Zone when he sent back Liton Kumar Das inside eight overs. Since then, the bankers mislaid the backbone after losing their five wickets in the space of 57 runs. Skipper Alok Kapali then attempted to make a resistance against Central zone’s stronger bowling unit. Kapali as the ninth batsman fell for 71 off 114. He smashed nine fours and one six at his 145-minute stay at wickets.
Shuvagata Hom, who showcased his all-round performance in the last round, was the most successful bowler as he finished with the figures of 14-3-46-4. Mohammad Sharif, Kamrul Islam Rabbi and Taibur Rahman Parvez snapped up two wickets each for the winners. But Mohammad Sharif was adjudged player of the match for his all-round performance as he struck 71 and claimed six wickets.
South Zone vs North Zone
The experienced campaigner Naeem Islam guided the team from the front to draw the match. Naeem struck his 20th first class century that leapfrogged Alok Kapali (19). Now Tushar Imran (22) is only ahead of him. En route to his unbeaten 129 off 243, Naeem a string of successful partnerships, which provided an impetus for them to make the draw against South Zone.
Together with Forhad Hossain, Naeem hit an invaluable 136-run for the third wicket and another 71 runs with Dhiman Ghosh. Young pacer Nahidul Islam was the most successful bowler who picked up five wickets, conceding for 130 runs. Rubel Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat and Abdur Razzak snared one wicket apiece for the South Zone.
Tushar Imran, who set a couple of milestones-the highest run-getter (9,000) and the highest first class century (22)- by hitting a double century, was named player of the match.
