The country is now producing 73 crore tonnes of milk against the demand of 147 crore tonnes, meat 62 crore tones against demand 71 crore tonnes and eggs 1191.24 crore pieces against annual demand of 1675 crore pieces.
The statistics were given during a press briefing by livestock and fisheries minister Sayeedul Haque at the secretariat yesterday.
The ministry is going to organise ‘animal service week-2017’ for the first time in the country which will be observed between February 23 and 27, the fisheries minister told the press briefing.
Bangladesh is running short of its required amount of animal protein like milk, meat and egg by 83 crore tonnes and by 484 crore pieces.
“Productions of milk, meat and eggs have increased due to effective steps taken by the department of livestock in the last five years. Production of milk is increased to 73 crore tones from 34.60 crore tones, meat increased to 62 crore tones from 23.30 crore tones and eggs increased to 1192 crore pieces from 730.38 crores in the last five years,” Sayeedul Haque informed the media.
He further said that a total of cattle and buffalo heads were 45 lakh in last year’s Eid-ul-Azha, while goats and sheeps were 71 lakh across the country.
“We are meeting the qurbani demand from our local animals. Besides, about Tk 25,000 crore has already been invested in poultry sector, which is the largest investment sector after ready made garment in the country,” the fisheries and livestock minister said.
