Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) operator Ollo could roll out network to offer LTE service that is commonly marketed as “4G” across the country following the verdict of the apex court.
The Appellate Division (AD) verdict conferred the legality of the allocation of 800 MHz spectrum as well as of the BWA license to BIEL, owner of the brand name Ollo, said officials.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) lawyer Khandker Reza-e-Raquib told The Independent that the AD has said the allocation of frequencies and license issued by the BTRC to BIEL has been given complied fully with the law and telecommunication act.
So, Ollo could run their operation for LTE if there is no other legal barrier, he added.
BTRC issued the BWA Services license on November 21, 2013 to Bangladesh Internet Exchange Limited (BIEL) and its brand name Ollo with the permission to offer LTE service.
On October 8, 2014, New Generation Graphics Limited (NGGL) amalgamated with BIEL as well as merged their spectrum. But, challenging the move, separate writ petitions were filed with the court.
The 4G (4th generation) mobile and data technology is the descendant of 3G. It is so far the fastest mobile broadband technology in current time and 10 times higher than 3G. LTE (long term evaluation), commonly marketed as 4G LTE, is standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals.
Terming the final confirmation of BTRC decisions in issuing licenses and frequencies to Ollo as a milestone, BIEL Managing Director Yulia Aksyutina said, “We are now waiting for more LTE equipment to arrive in order to increase the coverage of our services.”
She said: “They would continue supporting Digital Bangladesh program, which will help implement Electronic Government, mobile banking initiatives and bridge digital divide in Bangladesh fulfilling a2i program demands.”
BIEL LTE network coverage presently exists partially in Dhaka city and rest of Divisional Headquarters. Network is successfully running in Dhaka, Jessore, Gopalganj, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Barisal and Rangpur.
BIEL is constantly increasing the coverage of its LTE network which today operates in 800, 2600 and 3500 MHz bands and more and more customers can be proud of using the super advanced technology.
The other two BWA operators are Banglalion and Qubee.
Yulia Aksyutina said: “We hope that in 2017 Bangladesh will make a significant step towards the accessibility of LTE in rural areas that will definitely boost online education, healthcare advise, connect governmental organizations in remote areas which in its turn will make positive impact on the economic growth of the country.”
