Private universities warned of legal action
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday warned of action against private universities that have not followed government guidelines on running the institutions.

“Private universities that have failed to shift to their own permanent campuses or have several illegal outer campuses, as well as those running only for business purposes, would face legal action including stopping of admission,” the minister said at the sixth convocation of Daffodil International University (DIU).
Nahid attended the convocation as a delegate of President Md Abdul Hamid, who is also the DIU chancellor. The function was held on the varsity’s own permanent campus at Ashulia in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
A total of 3,473 graduates received certificates from the education minister, while four received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal. They are Parmita Rahman Ivy (business administration department), Shirajum Monira (textile engineering department), Imdadul Haque and Nusrat Zahan Happy (both from public health department).
Besides, 13 graduates received gold medals for outstanding results.
Exhorting the new graduates to play a significant role in nation building, the minister said, “We don’t see any difference between the students of public and private universities.
They are all our children and future of the nation. We want to ensure quality education and equal opportunities for them.”
“Some of the private universities still could not fulfil the minimum conditions. But they cannot go on like this for very long,” he added.
He said that the number of students in private universities was more than that in public universities. “There are also 1,632 foreign students studying in the 95 private universities in the country,” he added.
The minister also praised the DIU authorities for signing a memorandum of understanding with the Bangladesh Agro Processor Association for creating skilled manpower for the government’s agro-based processed food project. “We hope DIU would take such initiatives in future for the country's socio-economic development,” he said.
University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Prof. Abdul Mannan, founder and chancellor of VIT University and president of Education Promotion Society for India, Dr G Viswanathan, DIU vice-chancellor Prof Yousuf Mahbubul Islam and DIU’s board of trustees chairman Md Sabur Khan also addressed the convocation.
The UGC chairman said the students were the future of the country. “The DIU has distinguished itself in the field of higher education with special emphasis on ICT. I hope the new graduates would uphold the institution’s vision and successfully combine their academic learning and social responsibilities to build a brighter Bangladesh,” he zadded.
At the same time, Mannan said, “But some students and teachers were found to be involved in militant activities and responsible for death and destruction. Innocent students are also being affected because of such elements. I urge all to resist militancy.”
On his part, Viswanathan urged the students to transfer the knowledge acquired in classrooms to real-life situations.
