Jewellry trader killed in Comilla
Comilla: A jewellry trader was hacked to death by miscreants in Sinduria Rail Bridge area of Burichang upazila on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
Officer-in-charge of Burichang Police Station Uttam Kumar Barua said deceased Abul Kalam Azad, 38, son of Jamir Ali, a resident of Begumabad village in Debidwar upazila, was returning home from his jewelry shop riding a motorcycle at night.
When he reached the Rail Bridge area, a group of miscreants waylaid him and hacked him indiscriminately around 9:15pm, leaving him dead on the spot, the OC said quoting witnesses.
Man jailed for murder attempt on neighbour in Jhalakathi
A court here yesterday sentenced a man to eight years’ rigorous imprisonment for the murder attempt on a man in Sadar upazila in 2013, reports UNB.
The court also fined the convict, Komol Hawlader, son of Shukhranjan Hawlader of Khajura village in the upazila, Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer one year more jail.
According to the prosecution, a case was filed against Komol with Sadar Police Station one day after he hacked his neighbour Bikash, son of Biplob Mandol, with a sharp weapon on the night of May 15, 2013.
On June 30, 2013, sub-inspector of the police station Zakir Hossain submitted a charge-sheet against Komol before a court after an investigation.
After examining records and witnesses, Judge of Jhalakati Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court M Abu Shamim handed down the verdict.
College student electrocuted
MEHERPUR: A college student died of electrocution at the village Amdaho in Sadar Upazila of the district yesterday, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Shaon, 17, hailed from the town Meherpur. He was a student of Meherpur Govt College.
Local said the fatal incident took place at about 10 am today when Shaon went at the village for commercial purpose. He was admitted to Meherpur General Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Meherpur Sadar Thana Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury confirmed the incident of death.
43 arrested in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Police, in special drives from Tuesday night to this morning, arrested 43 persons including nine alleged drug traders, and recovered illegal drugs- Phensidyl and Yaba tablets from eight upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
Police said, during the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested 17 persons including nine drug traders with 350 bottles of Phensidyl, Biral two, Birganj three, Nawabganj three, Kaharole two, Parbatipur four, Ghoraghat two, Hakimpur police six and Birampur police arrested four accused.
Hakimpur Thana police recovered 502 pieces of Yaba tablets from the upazila during the period.
Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.
