Book Fair and developing the habit
of reading books

Our book fair is a unique arrangement which contributes a great deal to creating new writers, developing the hunger of reading books of people belonging to all strata of the society and spreading the knowledge to enlighten the people. The Amar Ekushey Book Fair began on February 1 attracting a huge number of visitors as the month-long mega exposition is exhibiting books of different genres of literature and other areas of knowledge. With huge enthusiasm and curiosity thousands of visitors of all ages flock to different stalls and pavilions to find out books of their beloved writers. The Suhrawardy Udyan has been decorated with 12 divisions. Some 663 units have been allotted to 409 institutions at the academy and on Suhrawardy Udyan premises. While speaking at the inaugural function of the fair on February 1, professor Dong You Chen, a Chinese researcher and translator on Rabindranath Tagore’s works said, “Literary works of Rabindranath Tagore are not only for Bengali speaking people, these also for whole mankind of the universe as his extra-ordinary creative works contain deep knowledge and messages for well-being of the people. Luz Maria Lopez from Puerto Rica said, “I am deeply touched with impressive creative works of Rabindranath Tagore. I want to know Bangla literature and culture. That is why I have come to Bangladesh as a participant of Ekushey Book Fair.”Chinmoy Guho said, “I am thrilled as a participant of this book fair. Bangladesh was born as a result of profound love and huge sacrifices for Bangla language. Echoing huge love for Bangla literature, other foreign writers said this book fair could be an excellent platform for all people with different languages.

Bishwo Shahitto  also contributes to developing the habit of reading books among the people in general and students in particular.  It launched its journey thirty-nine years back in the country and its  ‘ book reading program’ has now reached to twenty lakh students of 12 thousand educational institutions. Kudos to Bishwo Shahitto Kendro. In this age of moral degradation, the sweet call of the materialistic pleasure, the ugly claws of drugs, juvenile delinquency, spreading of bribe culture and easy pass and touch system have engulfed the whole society. Who will save the future generation from these evils?  The founder of Bishwo  Shahitto  Kendra  professor Abduallah Abu Sayeed has rightly said “ I could not read books when I was like you. My dream in school life was different. As I could not get the opportunity to read books as you do, I have opened it for 25 lakh readers. You can do everything if you only read books without doing anything else.” I  endorse the views expressed by Professor Sayeed that our future generation, our students of schools and colleges can do everything if they develop the habit of reading books which contain the elevated thoughts and  noble ideas of great men and social thinkers.
“I take part in the competition as book reading gives me pleasure. Now that liking has increased further. I like the Palli Sahamaj by Sharat Chandra among twelve books I have read in this series. The book reflects the urban people’s concern for rural people that is a great learning for me”. A student named Sumia from Ajimpur Girls School expressed her feeling in this way while receiving the award of book reading competition.  On 27 January 2017 the students from 111 schools of Dhaka city received prizes arranged by Bisha Shahittay Kendra on the occasion of ‘Book Reading Activities 2016’. Sumia represents the future mothers of the country who need to know how to lead a polished and refined life telling ‘No’ to drugs, child marriage and other evils. Thanks Sumia. You have definitely inspired thousands of students like you.
Just like any other muscle or part of the   body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, No matter how much stress someone has at work, in their personal relationships, or countless other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when they lose themselves in a great story. A well-written novel can transport a reader to other realms, while an engaging article will distract her and keep her in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and allowing her to relax. Everything we read fills our head with new bits of information, and we never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge we have, the better-equipped we are to tackle any challenge we’ll ever face. The more we read, the more words we gain exposure to, and they’ll inevitably make their way into our everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing that we can speak to higher-ups with self-confidence. Book help us do it.
Professor Zamilur Reza Chowhdury , a famous educationist of the country and  Trusty of Bishwo Shahitto  Kendra said, “ Those who will read books will steer the country towards real development by 2030. You should read all kinds of books.” He further said, “The pressure on the students to become doctors or engineers has become less. You can go forward according to your own ways. He wants to mean that students now have the opportunity to choose their own ways of life to follow as in the recent past most guardians pressed their children to become doctors or engineers which used to limit their studies. Of course, situation is so encouraging even now as today’s students run after obtaining grades at the cost of their personal pleasure, leisure and reading books of their own choice. Professor Jafar Iqbal has pictured the present time thus , “Imaginative power to be squeezed from knowledge which does not come from food or fruits. After our birth we have the power of imagination which we destroy gradually keeping ourselves confined to textbook, coaching and private teaching etc. to increase this power the only way is reading books. If everybody of this country reads books, they will not have to do anything else. The country will go forward. The main theme is gaining knowledge which you can do reading books and encouraging your friends to read books.”Reading books is also vital for learning new languages, as non-native speakers gain exposure to words used in context, which will ameliorate their own speaking and writing fluency. When we read a book, we have to remember an assortment of characters, their backgrounds, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the various arcs and sub-plots that weave their way through every story. That’s a fair bit to remember, but brains are marvellous things and can remember these things with relative ease. When someone  reads a book, all of his  attention is focused on the story—the rest of the world just falls away, and he  can immerse himself  in every fine detail he is  absorbing.
Anisul Haque said he read two books of Imdadul Haque Milon in his student life which inspired him to write books. He is now a successful and popular writer of the country. Our students can follow these sort of accomplished individuals and follow their lives. Imdadul Haque Milon , another giant  of Bengali literature  of the present time has said, “ I seem to be enlightened in the midst of you. If feel myself enlightened in the midst of you. You will be enlightened reading books and the country will be enlightened through you. ’Francis Bacon encouraged us to read books.  Bacon argues that studies "serve for Delight, for Ornament, and for Ability."  For delight, Bacon means one's personal, private education; for "Ornament," he means in conversation between and among others, which Bacon labels as "Discourse."  Studies for "Ability" lead one to judgment in business and related pursuits.
Exposure to published, well-written work has a noted effect on one’s own writing, as observing the cadence, fluidity, and writing styles of other authors will invariably influence readers’ own work. In the same way that musicians influence one another, and painters use techniques established by previous masters, so do writers learn how to craft prose by reading the works of others. In addition to the relaxation that accompanies reading a good book, it’s possible that the subject we read about can bring about immense inner peace and tranquility. To help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses, we can suggest them just to read books. Books have healing influence on human mind. To get rid of social ills which originate from the minds of the people living in the society we must promote the habit of book reading with a serious tremor.
Our book fair should be spread in divisional and even old district levels instead of keeping it limited to Dhaka city only. It will make wide opportunity for increasing number of population to read books to broaden their mind and open their inward eyes. Here lies the real development, here we can see assurance of human welfare banishing the current anxieties and ills pricking the society.
