Inadequate gas, electricity choke textile investments

Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) president Tapan Chowdhury pointed out three factors—inadequate gas, scarcity of electricity and land deficiency—as hindrance to textile sector investment. The BTMA president said this on Sunday during a press meet for the 14th Dhaka International Textile and Garment Machinery Exhibition (DTG), at the BTMA conference room in Dhaka. Yorkers Trade and Marketing Services Company, Hong Kong, and Chan Chao International Co Ltd, are jointly organising the four-day Dhaka International Textile and Garment Machinery Exhibition.
Talking about prospects for producing high-end ready-made garments (RMG), Chowdhury said that every other country is producing and going after more premium products, but, here in Bangladesh, inadequate availability of gas and electricity have remained as hindrance towards producing more valuable merchandise.
“More advanced textile factories which are fully-compliant and eco-friendly are being built in Bangladesh so we don’t need to import fabrics from abroad”, Chowdhury informed.
The last edition of DTG saw spot orders worth $250 million, the BTMA president said. According to BTMA officials, investment in Bangladesh's textile sector topped $6 billion. The textile industry has been playing a significant role in building a robust and sustainable backward-linkage industry, BTMA officials added.
This year, the RMG sector contributed 86 per cent of the country's entire export income. Hence, the contribution of textiles, in GDP, is approximately 13 per cent, said the BTMA officials.
The employment opportunity in textile sector is enormous because textile industry is known to be a capital intensive industry, officials informed.
1,000 textile machinery manufacturers, from 33 countries, will participate in the exhibition spanning 18 halls comprising 1,200 booths, organisers said.
Textile machinery worth Tk 8,322 crore was imported in FY 2015-2016, while the figure was Tk 7,489 crore for FY 2014-2015—a growth of 11 per cent.
DTG is the biggest exhibition in the textile and garments sector, also known as mini International Textile Machinery Exhibition (ITME) in South Asia.
The four-day exhibition will start on February 23, at 11:30 am. The venue is Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).
The exhibition will remain open from 12 am to 8 pm everyday, and tickets are not required for the visitors.
