Bengali should be made UN official language, says Quader

Ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said that Bengali should be made an official language of United Nations (UN). “Bengali is spoken by more than 32 crore people across the world. Now it is only a matter of time before Bengali is made an official language of the UN. We all should be vocal to make it a UN official language,” Quader told reporters after placing wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital. Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said the dignity of the Bengali language has been hampered for different reasons and people from all quarters should remain cautious to uphold the dignity of the Bengali language. Among others, AL leaders Abdur Rahman, Abdus Sobhan Golap, Hasan Mahmud, BM Mozammel Haque, Enamul Haque Shamim and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury were also present on the occasion. Earlier, the ruling party leaders led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader attended a Doa Mahfil and offered special prayers for the martyrs of the Language Movement at the Azimpur Graveyard in the capital.
Currently, the UN has six official languages - English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic. English and French are the daily working languages of the organisation, although English is more frequently used than French.
