CJ offers apology for not having Bangla in court proceedings

STAFF REPORTER

Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday expressed sorrow for not being able to fully introduced Bangla in court proceedings and said that he would try to introduce Bangla in the Supreme Court before his retirement. “We are sorry as Bangla has not been introduced in court proceedings though it (Bangla) has been introduced at public offices. I hope the use of Bangla in the higher courts will be introduced fully before my retirement,” he said.
The chief justice will go into retirement in January next year. The CJ also said that the judiciary authorities were looking for an appropriate translation device so that the judgments delivered by the courts could be translated in Bangla. “If such a device can be introduced, the use of Bangla will automatically be ensured,” the chief justice observed while talking to journalists after paying homage to the heroes of 1952 language movement at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital. He also said that some judges of the High Court Division have been writing judgments in Bangla very beautifully and that it might be followed by others. “We are trying to implement it at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court,” he added. The High Court has issued several orders over the use of Bangla as the official language in state and administrative affairs as well as on license plates for vehicles, signboards and television commercials. Former chief justices Muhammad Habibur Rahman and ABM Khairul Haque as well some High Court judges had written some verdicts in Bangla.
