Speakers at a post-rally discussion organized by Rajshahi unit of World Poultry Science Association of Bangladesh (WPSA) in association with Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) recently unequivocally called for a substantial and sustainable promotion of the country’s poultry sector through removing its existing problems to cut the nation’s protein deficiency, according to a report in this newspaper on Sunday. Promotion of the poultry sector is very important to remove the existing protein deficiency alongside ensuring food security. It is encouraging to note that Bangladesh has made a record in fish production in the world. Fish meets the requirement for protein in human body. Now the government should give due emphasis to promotion of the poultry sector. As a matter of fact, protein is the vital nutrition for normal growth and development of brain and other essential nourishments of human body while poultry is the pivotal source of nutrition.
The country has immense prospects of expanding the poultry sector through best uses of its existing natural resources. The poultry sector can meet up the nutritional deficit especially meat and eggs. Lack of animal protein like meat and egg causes malnutrition. Production of huge number of eggs from poultry farms can supply protein for people and it will ultimately protect them from malnutrition.
What is needed is extending logistic supports and motivation of people about the importance of poultry sector. The vast youth force in the country can be engaged in this sector. It can solve unemployment problem greatly. A family can earn a substantial amount of money by selling eggs from a poultry farm of moderate size. Many people, particularly jobless rural youths, have become financially solvent through poultry farming. This has also contributed to employment generation considerably. Consumption of poultry meat has also increased with the population boom in the country.
All concerned should come forward for flourishing the poultry sector. The contribution of the livestock sector is immense in terms of meeting the protein deficiency and socio economic development. Equally uplifting the poultry sector for food security, self-employment and poverty reduction is of prime importance.
The government, particularly the ministry and the department concerned, can provide necessary financial and logistic supports to the people willing to undertake poultry farming and other related jobs. Provision of bank loans on easy terms and conditions and adequate training to jobless youths can give impetus in this regard. Generation of awareness can also bring the desired results.
