Six Bangladeshi cricketers remained unsold in the 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction yesterday at Bangalore.
The six players who showed their interest to play the cash-rich tournament were—Anamul Haque, Mehedi Hasan Miraj, Mahmudullah Riyad, Sabbir Rahman, Tamim Iqbal and Taskin Ahmed.
Anamul was the first player to put on the auction but failed to attract the buyers. The likes of Mahmudullah, Sabbir and Mehedi also tasted the same fate while Tamim Iqbal and Taskin Ahmed were yet to be called in the auction that is still underway.
All of the Bangladeshi players have a base price of 30 lakh rupees.
Earlier two other Bangladeshi players—fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan have been retained by defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad and former champions Kolkata Knight Riders respectively.
Mohammad Nabi of Afghanistan became the first cricketer from his country to be picked to play in the IPL, the professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during April and May of every year by franchise teams representing Indian cities. His compatriot leg-spinner Rashid Khan got the team later but while Nabi was given just INR 30 lakh, Rashid, an 18-year old player got an amount of INR 4 crore. Both of them were acquired by Mustafizur’s Sunriser Hyderabad.
Apart from Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mohammad Ashraful and Abdur Razzak were the other three players to play at least one match in IPL.
Mohammad Ashraful played for Mumbai Indians in 2009 but he played only one match. Mashrafe Mortaza, one of Bangladesh’s finest pacers and captain of the limited overs side, played for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009. He too played in just one match in which he gave away 58 runs in his four overs. However due to his busy international schedule and injuries, he hasn’t played since that season. Left arm spinner Abdur Razzak also played a match for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2008.
Tamim Iqbal, the dashing opener, was signed up by Pune Warriors in 2012 but could not play any match.
