Bangladesh’s ICC Women’s World Cup hopes ruined

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh women’s cricket team’s high hopes to play the next ICC Women’s World Cup was evaporated when they conceded a 42-run defeat to the host Sri Lanka in the rain-soaked last match of the Super Six in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017 at the Nondescripts Cricket Ground in Colombo yesterday.
Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka compiled 197 for nine in 50 overs courtesy of Chamari Jayangani’s 84 after which Bangladesh put on 68 for five before the interference of the downpours. Hasini Perera (32), Nipuni Hansika (19), Dilani Surangika (12) and Udeshika Prabodhani ( not out 12) were the other notable scorers for Sri Lankan side.
Salma Khatun was the most successful bowler, who claimed three wickets for 18.
Chasing the target, the Tigresses fumbled at the very first ball of the innings when they lost opener Sharmin Sultana, who was trapped lbw by left-arm pacer Udeshika Prabodhani.
Then Prabodhani extended the fuss further when she got rid of Farzana Haque in the last delivery of her second over when the visitors slumped to 13 for two.
Skipper Rumana Ahmed trudged back to the pavilion being trapped lbw by spinner Inoka Ranaweera to add 12 runs for the third wicket stand with Nigar Sultana.
Together with Shaila Sharmin, Nigar hit 27-run for the fourth wicket, which crossed the 50-run mark. But a devastating spell from Inoshi Fernando increased the trouble of Bangladesh when she sent back Nigar Sultan and Sharmin Akhtar in two successive deliveries while the tourists were struggling at 52 for five.
While Shaila Sharmin and Salma Khatun were batting on 21 and seven respectively, the rain intervened. Finally the match could not resume due to the persistent rain. Sri Lanka was declared as the winners of the match according to Duck-Lewis Method.
Pacer Prabodhani and spinner Fernando evenly shared two wickets between them, while spinner Ranaweera bagged one wicket for the winners.
Now Bangladesh will play fifth place decider against Ireland on Tuesday before returning home from Colombo on Wednesday.
