Bangladesh team for SL tour likely to be named today

Sports Reporter

Fitness will be key in selecting a player for the Test format as Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to announce a squad for the national team’s tour in Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh team’s performance has been ravaged by the injury to several key players of late which is why the team management is believed to emphasize on the fitness issue. But at the same time there will be no gross change in the team apart from including some new faces for the T20 series in Sri Lanka, hinted Minhajul Abedin Nannu, the chairman of the national team selection panel.
The team however is likely to be announced today, according to Nannu.
“The team is almost finalized. We may announce it by February 20. One or two players from the squad of the Hyderabad Test may be changed, apart from that, the team will be almost same,” Nannu said.
“The fitness was key in selecting the team. We took the physio report to assess the fitness condition of the players.”
Nannu however didn’t reveal whether Mushfiqur Rahim will keep the wicket, specially after his horrible show behind the wicket during the one-off Test against India.
“No discussion is held yet about Mushfiqur Rahim’s wicket-keeping. We have a meeting with captain. We will then discuss about it,” he said.
According the sources, there is every chance that Liton Das who was not featured in the Test against India could keep the wicket in Sri Lanka series and in that case an extra batsman might be included into the side. But it is all but sure fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman drafted into the side after he showed enough sign of recovering from his injury albeit there is still concern about Imrul Kayes.
“Mustafiz is quite well. He is fully prepared for Test,” he said, adding “We have a bit concern about Imrul Kayes. It is very difficult to say how quickly he will come round. He will play BCL match tomorrow. He has to prove not only in batting but also in fielding, running and throwing.”
“Touring in Sri Lanka is much important for us. We meanwhile played three Test matches in overseas’ conditions (New Zealand and India. In the light of it, we have taken the series against Sri Lanka in a different way. We had a lot of deficit to play in foreign soil. Hopefully we could ulitilse the experience that we gathered from these Test matches,” he added.
Considering the weather and condition of Sri Lanka, the panel chairman said that they have decided to send 17-member squad.
“The squad will be formed by 15 players. But firstly we will send 16 players. An additional player will go with the squad. Currently there is a bit hot in Sri Lanka. After the practice match we’ll shorten the squad,” the former skipper said.
When asked about any change in Sri Lanka, Minhajul Abedin said that they are mulling to pick a few new players for T20 format.
“We have some established players. We are not thinking much about Test and ODI series. But we are thinking to pick some new players in stocks ahead of T20 series,” he informed.
Before flying for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh will hold three days practice session in Dhaka which will began on February 24 without some key players like Shakib Al Hasan, Mamhudullah Riyad and Tamim Iqbal who are busy in playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Dubai.
“They will go straight to Sri Lanka from PSL to join the team,” Nannu told in response to a query.
