Mohammedan Sporting Club suffered big blow in their opening match in the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament when they went down to Manag Marsyangdi Club of Nepal by 2-0 yesterday.
Held at the MA Aziz Stadium, Chittagong, Afeez Oladipo and Bishal Rai scored one goal each in the second half after an evenly encounter in the day’s first match.
Manag Marshyangdi drew the first blood on 32nd minute with producing a scoring chance when the Nepalese team moved up with the right side and Olasemi Samson’s goal bound powerful right footer deflected Mohammedan defender Elita Benjamin. Confused goalkeeper Mamun Khan trying hard to save but the ball hit the side post after touching his hands.
Mohammedan responded strongly three minutes later with generating a couple of chances when Bishawnath Ghosh provided a right side cross inside the box but Nabib Newaz Jibon was too late to shot having the keeper one on one situation.
Mohammedan could go for break with first lead but on 43rd minute two successive efforts went in vain with Sajib’s attempt returning after shattering the side post when he received Dawda Ceesay’s cut back. But Dawda Ceesay made the blunder failing to score from close range when he took a sky-high shot on returned ball to waste the chance.
After the goalless first half, Mohammedan suffered a blow early in the second half with Afeez Oladipo of Nigeria led Nepalese champions on 54th minute.
It was a lapse of Mohammedan’s defenders when they left Afeez Oladipo free as he saw no trouble to receive a ball came from counter attack provided by Rohit Chand and just entered into the box before sending the ball into net over the advancing goalkeeper (1-0).
In the post match reaction MSC coach Sentu also agreed that due to defender’s fault they conceded the goal- “In fact defender Dawda Ceesay made the blunder keeping their forward unmarked. Even you can say that both the goals were the results of defenders missing.”
However, Mohammedan had the opportunity to bounce back when they were very closer to have the equaliser but the failures of forward and Manag Marshyangdi defenders were also very sharp to destroy all the attacks.
As the Manag Marshyangdi coach Chhring Gurung also gave credits to his team’s defenders when he told in the post match press briefing, “I would like give some credits to my defenders as they did better jobs and were also better than the Mohammedan’s defense line.”
Mohammedan, after trialing by a goal, were trying to playing all out attacking strategy, as most of the time their defense was almost wide open and the opponents took the opportunity with quick counter attacks.
Manag piled more misery for the Dhaka giants when Bishal Rai shattered the Mohammedan’s hopes when he scored a nice goal just beating his marker with a superb speed after taking the ball from Samson.
Bishal entered into the box and powered a low shot into the far post as hapless goalkeeper Mamun Khan had nothing to do on 87th (2-0).
Mohammedan coach Sentu expressed his disappointment with the result when he said, “I am really disappointed with the result. The poor scoring ability is really frustrating.’
