A documentary film ‘Tasmina: The Horse Girl’ has been officially selected for screening at MICE Film Festival, to be held in Valencia, Spain from February 19 to 26. As requested by the director, the film will be shown on International Mother Language, one of the most significant day in the history of Bangladesh on February 21.
Faridur Rahman, director of ‘Tasmina: The Horse Girl’ and its producer Mahbuba Begum Hena left for Madrid on Wednesday to attend the Film Festival. It may also be mentioned that Mahbuba Begum Hena has been nominated as a Jury Member for a different category in the festival.
In the film, Tasmina, an eleven year old girl of a remote village in Northern Bangladesh is known as ‘Horse Girl’ in her neighborhood. Where more than sixty percent of the girls are married off before their 15th birthday, Tasmina aspires to ride horse and join horse races at least for another five years. In this rural society outdoor games are not allowed for the ‘grown up’ women and horse race is unthinkable.
Earlier Tasmina used to join the races riding other people’s horse. She won several competitions, but didn’t get the prize money or the awards. When she demands her name to be announced as a competitor not the owner’s name, she ignores the norms of male dominated society. She is confident to achieve her goals and becomes a source of inspiration for many young girls. Now she dreams to buy a big horse of her own. But who will give her the huge amount she needs?
Meanwhile, ‘Tasmina: The Horse Girl’ received several international recognitions, including Best Short Documentary, Women’s International Entertainment Film Festival, Prix Jeunesse Theme Prize and Gender Equity Prize Nomination at Prix Jeunesse International Film Festival, Munich, Germany. The documentary’s official selection and honourable mention include LA Cinefest, Los Angeles; Transylvania Short Film Festival, Tirgu-Mures, Romania; 24th Contravision Film Festival, Berlin, Germany and DocuTIFF, Tirana, Albania, Festival Film Rakyat, Bogor, Indonesia and Olympia Film Festival for Children and Young People, Pyrgos, Greece.
