Rohingya crisis

UN special envoy arrives tomorrow

HUMAYUN KABIR BHUIYAN

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar Yanghee Lee will arrive in Dhaka tomorrow on three-day visit to see for herself the situation evolved in Cox’s Bazar from the military crackdown on the other side of the border that forced about 70,000 Rohingyas to cross into Bangladesh to join another 3-5 lakhs already living in the country for decades. According to sources at the foreign ministry, during the envoy’s visit, Bangladesh will not interfere into her activities and will not even voice any opinion regarding the protracted Rohingya problem the counter has been suffering for a long time. Dhaka will make sure that Lee can work the way she likes, they said.
“We are not going to say anything. We will just facilitate her visit in the manner she likes. We want her to see everything at her will to have a broader picture as well as a better understanding to say to the world what is actually happening,” a senior foreign ministry official told The Independent.
“We will simply do what we did when the team of UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) came to Bangladesh. They worked their way into the matter and we have just facilitated the visit,” he said. Lee is coming to
Bangladesh for on her own initiative, he added.  The special envoy visited Myanmar, including the Rakhine state bordering Bangladesh, from January 9 to 21.
Following the visit, she said that the Myanmar authorities denied her access to some places. Following the visit, Lee detailed the brutality by the Myanmar military, saying that the ongoing security operations against Muslim population, commonly known as Rohingyas, are being conducted with little regard for the rights and dignity of the minority population. Unlike Myanmar, the special envoy will have unfettered access to every place, said the sources.
