2 ‘criminals’ killed in ‘gunfights’

A suspected member of an outlawed party was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Rajbari while an alleged yaba trader was killed in a gunfight between groups yesterday, reports UNB quoting police.
The gunfight in Rajbari took place at Maura Bongram in Pangsha upazila. The deceased was identified as Moazzem Fakir, a member of 'Bipul Bahini', an outlawed gang.
Mofazzal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Pangsha Police Station, said police arrested Moazzem on Thursday night. During his interrogation, police came to know that his associated were gathering at Maura Bongram village.
Later, a police team along with Moazzem conducted a drive in the area around 2:30 am. Sensing the police presence, Moazzem's associates opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
At one stage, Moazzem was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries while the others managed to flee, police said.
He was taken to Panghsa Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Police said they also recovered one shutter gun and one bullet from the spot.
Moazzem was wanted in a number of cases, including that of murder, the OC said. Meanwhile, in Cox’s Bazar, a suspected Yaba trader was killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of Yaba traders at Kata Pahar in Kalatoli area of sadar upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mostaq Ahmed alias  Haji Mafiz, 25. Being tipped off that two groups of Yaba traders were exchanging gunfire over establishing dominance in the area, a team of police went to the spot and found Mostaq lying in a pool of blood in the early hours on Friday, said Bakhtier Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station. Later, he was taken to Sadar hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police recovered 2800 pieces of Yaba pills, firearms and bullets from the spot. Mafiz was wanted in several cases, said the OC.
