Fire in Mohammadpur slum

It is a very sad piece of news that some 200 shanties gutted as a slum caught fire in the capital’s Mohammadpur area Thursday. Quoting the sources of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room, a report published in this newspaper said that at the Banshbari Slum in Chan Miah Housing in the place fire started at around 4.25am. Though the fire was brought under control after one hour, it was able to engulf the whole slum and burnt down the large number of shanties.
Though the origin and cause of the fire could not yet be determined, the victims of the incident, who are stranded Pakistanis, said that it was a conspiracy and vested interest groups were involved behind the incident. It was a case of arson, according to them and believe that the conspirators want to evict them from the area of Chan Mia Housing project. Now it is the duty of the relevant people including the law enforcers to take the allegation seriously and find out what actually caused the fire.
The fact of the matter is that these people are human beings and used to maintain a very precarious living in the slums in abject condition. If it is really a case of conspiracy, the conspirators must be nabbed and brought to justice.
It is learnt that the administration will provide 30kg rice and Tk 3,000 for each of the victim families. It must be mentioned here that this succor from the government is nothing compared to their plight of these helpless people. In the recent months, the nation has seen several large fire incidents including the ones at Karail in Gulshan and Sattola in Mahakhali. Another devastating fire incident caused severe damage to the DCC Market in Gulshan-1. Now, to reduce the fire incidents, it is very vital to identify the real causes. But it is sad to note that in most cases different views came from different people and what actually caused a fire incident largely remained shrouded in mystery.
Many a time it was also noticed that people from the Fire Service and Civil Defence came to a spot late and by that time fire destroyed most of the belongings of people. Though we cannot ignore the fact that Dhaka city has narrow lanes and bylanes, it also ought to be mentioned that the skill of firemen need to be enhanced providing them with modern firefighting equipment.
