3 EZs to be set up for Indian investors: Minister

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday announced that Bangladesh will set up three economic zones (EZs) exclusively for Indian businessmen among 100 EZs. These three EZs will provide facilities to Indian investors.
“Indian investors, who will invest in these EZs, will greatly benefit. An investment-friendly situation is currently prevailing in Bangladesh,” he said, while briefing reporters after a meeting with the delegation of India’s Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) at his office in the Secretariat yesterday.
Tofail Ahmed urged the Indian government to withdraw the anti-dumping duty imposed on jute imported from Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is giving duty-free and quota-free facilities to all Indian goods, except tobacco and wine, but India imposes 12.50 per cent countervailing taxes from goods exported from Bangladesh, Tofail Ahmed pointed out, adding that India imposed a USD 329 anti-dumping tax on the exports of jute goods.
A 20-member business delegation led by overseas managing partner of Delstar, Dibya Sankar Das, held the meeting with the commerce minister.
Tofail Ahmed has said necessary facilities have been ensured for the foreign investors in Bangladesh. “The investors are allowed to send back 100 per cent of their capital to their countries. This is guaranteed by the law,” he added.
In response to a reporter’s question, Ahmed said the next parliamentary elections would be held under the Sheikh Hasina government. During the period of elections, the government will only extend help to the Election Commission for holding a free and fair election.
“General elections are held under the elected government in all democratic countries in the world. Hence, the next general elections will be held under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government,” Ahmed said, adding: “The BNP has no capability to stop the elections, which was proved in the earlier elections.”
The upcoming general elections will be held on any day before January 29, 2019, he said.
