1 held with 15 gold bars
Customs intelligence officials detained a passenger and recovered 15 gold bars worth Tk 70 lakh from his possession at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday, reports UNB.
Sources at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said its officials challenged Mannan Mia, who arrived here by a flight of Biman Bangladesh airlines from Dubai at around 11:00 am, when he was crossing the green channel.
Searching his luggage, the customs intelligence officials recovered the gold bars which were kept hidden under the trolley tray in a unique way, said director general of the CIID Dr Moinul Khan. A case was filed with Airport Police station in this connection.
icddr,b gets new COO
Former health secretary Syed Monjurul Islam has been appointed as chief operating officer (COO) and deputy executive director of icddr,b.
The board of trustees of icddr,b has announced the appointment which will effective from February 19, said a press release here yesterday. Islam retired from his post as secretary of the ministry of health and family welfare in October 2016 after a successful career.
190 gas connections snapped
Titas Gas authority removed 1.8 km illegal gas supply line and snapped unauthorised connections of 190 households at Gazipur district on Wednesday.
According to a statement of the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, a mobile court headed by an executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (Land) Masum Reza conducted a drive against the illegal gas pipeline and connections.
During the drive, huge gas pipelines of one and two inches diameter were removed from three spots at Maona area at Shripur upazila of the district. Some 290 ovens went out of commission with the snapping of the 190 illegal household connections.
70 tons of jatka seized in Ctg
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive seized 70 tons of jatka (Hilsha fry) from a ship at Sadarghat in the port city on Thursday.
Mimtanur Rahman, ASP (media) of RAB, said a mobile court of RAB led by two magistrates -Arafat Hossain and Syed Murad- conducted a drive at JK-3 ship in the Karnaphuli River and seized 70 tons of jatka around 10 am. However, the elite force members also detained the captain of the ship for interrogation.
Certificate awarding ceremony
Nineteen graduates received certificate of Islamic Development Bank-Bangladesh Islamic Solidarity Educational Wakf (IDB-BISEW) IT scholarship project for their best academic performance and outstanding career achievement.
The project authority of ‘IDB-BISEW IT Scholarship Project’ organised the certificate distribution ceremony at the IDB-BISEW Bhaban auditorium in the capital on Wednesday, says a press release. Course completion certificates were also distributed on the occasion. Members of the project’s consulting company Show & Tell Consulting Ltd were also present on the occasion. A total of 304 graduates belonging to seven professional courses received their diploma certificates.
24 CC cameras at Rangpur city
The district police administration has started setting up of 24 closed-circuit cameras at important points for preventing all sorts of crimes in the divisional city.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Rangpur Range Khondker Golam Faruk inaugurated the programme by pressing the remote control button at a ceremony held at Bangabandhu Square in Rangpur city yesterday as the chief guest.
Under the programme, twelve closed-circuit cameras would be set up in the first phase at the most important points like Medical College Mour, Bangladesh Bank Mour, DC Mour, Paira Chattar Mour and Jahaz Company Mour in the city. Rangpur District Police Control Room and Police Camps of the respective areas will monitor the close circuit cameras to control crimes in the city.
